ENGLISH 134: The Marriage Plot (seminar) Taught by: Claire Jarvis Fall Quarter, 2009-2010 MW 2:15-4:05, Room: 20-21G | This seminar investigates the centrality of the marriage plot in the development of the British novel. We begin in the 18th century with Samuel Richardson’s Pamela and end with Woolf’s modernist novel Mrs. Dalloway. Over the course of the quarter, we will examine the relationship between novelistic plotting and the development of female characters into marriageable women. Major topics will include: what is the relationship between the novel and feminine subjectivity? What aspects of marriage make it work as a plotting device? What kinds of marriages do marriage plots allow? Is the development of women’s political agency related to their prominence in the novel form? This course also satisfies the Writing in the Major requirement for English. This course fulfills the following Major Requirements:
