English 91 explores creative nonfiction in its various forms, including memoir, lyric essay, and literary journalism. We’ll read essays with a range of voices, styles, and structures, and examine how writers create vivid nonfiction prose using diverse techniques, including those commonly found in fiction. The course is designed for students to learn nonfiction writing through practice and discussion, and coursework includes writing exercises, a longer nonfiction project, and revisions. The writing workshop is an essential component of the course, and students are expected to actively read and discuss each other's work.
