Sometimes the best stories aren't made up - they tell you exactly what happened. This course introduces you to the exciting genre of creative nonfiction. Enthusiastic and dedicated students at every level of development (and from any major) are encouraged to apply for a place via the Creative Writing Program's lottery. We'll start by getting acquainted with the field through readings and short creative writing assignments. Then you'll create a CNF project of your own. This might be a personal essay about your life or your family, a piece of personal reportage about something you've experienced, a "lyric essay" about real life with poetic elements, or a hybrid. In the second part of the term, we'll discuss your projects in a non-scary workshop environment. The quality of this course for everyone depends directly on student participation. Bring your thoughts, comments, questions, and enthusiasms about writing and reading. Required Reading: The Touchstone Anthology of Contemporary Nonfiction and Tell It Slant: Writing and Shaping Creative Nonfiction.
