The Contemporary: MITCH THERIEAU ON POET LISA ROBERTSON

Join us at the next Contemporary meeting on Friday, November 13th @ 12:30pm PST (remote at Stanford via Zoom).

Mitch Therieau (MTL) will lead a discussion about the poetry of Lisa Robertson and how it is poised between the poststructuralist excesses of L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry and whatever has since taken its place. Therieau aptly describes the Canadian writer's thinking in general as "caught between the linguistic turn and what we could call the 'material turn' that accompanied the turn of the millennium."

Mitch Therieau is a third-year PhD student in Modern Thought & Literature. His research centers on what could be broadly called waste, or anything produced by a system that doesn't quite belong. Therieau is particularly interested in how a whole range of modern cultural artifacts, from 'lo-fi' music and pre-distressed jeans to speculative philosophy and the realist novel, work to manufacture a sense of wastedness or accidentalness.

Poet Lisa Robertson was born in Toronto in 1961. She lived for many years in Vancouver, where she studied at Simon Fraser University, ran an independent bookstore, and was a collective member of the Kootenay School of Writing, a writer-run center for writing, publishing, and scholarship. While in Vancouver, Robertson was also involved in Artspeak Gallery, an alternative gallery that connects the visual arts and writing.
