When your community’s drowning, what must change so people can breathe?

I'm interested in 20th century American literature written by and about groups that often exist in social margins. By interrogating texts in moments of identity conflict and in relation to broader sociological trends, I study how literature reifies or subverts ideology and social oppression. As a first-generation scholar originally from rural Texas, I’m invested in elucidating how scholarship and creative writing can push for a more inclusive social reality.
